ARRANGING ADULT CARE

Adult social care while in prison

"I want to know what care and support I can get while in prison."

Support and guidance

Leaving prison

If you’re being released from prison it is important to tell us where you are going to live.

Living in East Riding of Yorkshire

We'll:

  • arrange to reassess your needs to check if you still qualify for help from us, and to make sure you are getting the right care and support
  • look at any services you can access within the local community.

Living outside the area

We’ll inform the local council where you will be living about your care and support needs. They may complete another assessment to make sure you still qualify, and to make sure you are getting the right care and support.

Moving to a different prison

If you move to another prison outside East Riding of Yorkshire:

  • your support should continue
  • we’ll advise the council in your new location about your needs
  • they may complete another needs assessment to make sure you still qualify, and to make sure you are getting the right care and support.

Safeguarding

Your safety is the responsibility of the prison or approved premises where you are a resident. This means our safeguarding adults boards are not responsible for enquiries or reviews into abuse or neglect of a prisoner with care and support needs. However, we can advise, help and assist prison officials when needed, and may also ask prison staff to be members of our safeguarding adults boards.

Caring for someone while in prison

If you are in prison and you are caring for another prisoner, you may qualify for help and support from us to make sure your own needs are being met.

Please note: to qualify for care and support, your care work cannot be part of a voluntary or paid job.
